Joyce BERNAL's 10,000 Hours (2013) starring Robin PADILLA swept the 39th Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) awards last night with wins in fourteen categories including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor.
The action-thriller is based on the real story of Senator Panfilo Lacson who went into hiding for more than a year after being accused of murder in 2010. Charges were dropped one year later and he returned to the Philippines.
The 2nd and 3rd Best Picture awards went to comedies Girl, Boy, Bakla, Tomboy (2013) and My Little Bossings (2013) respectively. Both films also won acting awards, with the latter recognised for its theme song.
The festival's opening day box office on 25 Dec was ₱134 million (US$3.02 million), up 23% on 2012 numbers. However, if official numbers hold up, three of the event's eight films secured 90.8% of first-day box office income.
Bossings made ₱50.4 million (US$1.14 million) on opening day. Kris AQUINO, the comedy's star and producer, claimed to local media that the box office represents a record opening for a Filipino film.
Tomboy and horror Pagpag: Siyam na buhay (2013) were the runners-ups at the box office on opening day, making ₱47.6 million (US$1.07 million) and ₱23.7 million (US$534,000) respectively.
On Twitter, Star Cinema claimed that Pagpag is the highest grossing horror in the history of the MMFF.
There were reports online that musical Kaleidoscope World (2013) had already been pulled from Manila cinemas by its third day. In Cebu, at least two of the eight films had been pulled from cinemas after two days on release.
