The inaugural edition of the Helsinki Cine Aasia (14-17 Mar 2013) film festival opens tonight in Finland with MATSUE Tetsuaki 松江哲明's Flashback Memories 3D フラッシュバックメモリーズ 3D (2012).

The musical documentary, about a didgeridoo player who has lost his memory, headlines a particularly strong lineup of Japanese films that also includes Dreams for Sale 夢売るふたり (2012) and a programme of animated shorts.

Guests include China's CAI Shangjun 蔡尚君, attending with his film People Mountain People Sea 人山人海 (2011). Other Chinese-language films include 11 Flowers 我11 (2011) and, from Taiwan, Cha Cha for Twins 寶米恰恰 (2012).

Other highlights include Visra VICHIT-VADAKAN วศิรา วิจิตรวาทการ's docu-drama Karaoke Girl สาวคาราโอเกะ (2013) from Thailand in a programme of Southeast Asian cinema that includes features and shorts from Indonesia, Laos and the Philippines.

The festival is programmed by Eija NISKANEN, who previously co-curated Helsinki Film Festival: Love And Anarchy in the late 1990s when it was one of the most progressive Asian film events in Europe.
