Asian Project Market selects 30

Thirty projects have been shortlisted by the Busan International Film Festival 부산국제영화제 for its Asian Project Market (8-11 Oct 2012).

The lineup includes projects from six South Korean directors including YEUN Sang-ho 연상호 with his new animation The Fake 사이비. Yeon's The King of Pigs 돼지의 왕 (2011) was the talking point at last year's Busan festival. Former directing partners MIN Kyu-dong 민규동 | 閔奎東 and KIM Tae-yong 김태용 | 金兌容 have separate projects.

There are four projects apiece from China and India.

Projects from the Mainland include WANG Xiaoshuai 王小帥 with I Love You Arirang, about a North Korean restaurant worker, and David VERBEEK with his China-set vampire film Dead & Beautiful. GAO Zipeng 高子鹏, whose Lost in the Mountain 空山軼 (2011) competed in Busan last year, also brings his new project.

New projects from India include Santosh SIVAN's Ashes and Musa SYEED's US co-production The Doctor. Sivan's Vasco Da Gama ഉറുമി (2011), originally a project at Hong Kong Asia Film Financing Forum (HAF) 香港亞洲電影投資會, screened in Busan last year. Syeed's Valley of Saints premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.

Japan is represented by YUKISADA Isao 行定勲's Five Minutes to Tomorrow, and Oblivion 망각, the directorial debut of producer and actress SUGINO Kiki 杉野希妃. In a seeming tradition at the project market, there is a new film by CHANG Tso-chi 張作驥. Also from Taiwan, YANG Ya-che 楊雅喆 presents a new project.

Other interesting choices include Thailand's Thanakorn PONGSUWAN ธนกร พงษ์สุวรรณ with The Wind and Singapore's Royston TAN 陳子謙 (pictured) with Taiwan co-production 69. Lav DIAZ from the Philippines promises another epic film with The Great Desaparecido about revolutionary hero Andres Bonifacio (1863-1897).

Projects from last year's edition that have been completed include Nonzee NIMIBUTR นนทรีย์ นิมิบุตร's Distortion คน-โลก-จิต, HUR Jin-ho 허진호 | 許秦豪, Dangerous Liaisons 危險關係 and LEE Tien-chueh 李天爵's Legend of the T-Dog 命運狗不理. All three will likely screen at this year's edition of the festival.
