Five Asian films have been selected for competition and out of competition slots at the 68th Venice International Film Festival (31 August-10 Sept 2011).
Playing in competition are WEI Te-sheng 魏德聖's Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale 賽德克・巴萊 (2011), SONO Sion 園子温's Himizu ヒミズ (2011) and Ann HUI 許鞍華's A Simple Life 桃姐 (2011) (previously known as Sister Peach) which then goes on to Toronto.
Out of competition are Tormented ラビット・ホラー3D (2011), the 3-D picture previously known as Rabbit Horror, by Japan's SHIMIZU Takashi 清水崇, and the Jet LI 李連杰-starring The Sorcerer and the White Snake 白蛇傳說 (2011) (pictured).
Also playing out of competition is Steven Soderbergh's all star Contagion (2011) which was partly shot in Hong Kong and Macau and features Asian talent including Josie HO 何超儀 and Chin Han 黃經漢.
In tribute to Indian director Mani KAUL, who died this month, the festival is screening a restored print of his In Two Minds Duvidha (1973), which secured him the National Award for Best Director.
