The competition for first-time filmmakers includes titles from this year's Cannes (Don't Be Afraid, Bi! (2010)) film festivals.

The eight competing films are among 43 features and 21 shorts that will screen in the festival's sidebar dedicated to East Asian cinema that ranges from blockbuster Aftershock 唐山大地震 (2010) to Cannes-winner Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives ลุงบุญมีระลึกชาติ (2010).

Other highlights include The Fourth Portrait 第4張畫 (2010) from Taiwan, Cold Fish 冷たい熱帯魚 (2010) from Japan, The Dreamer Sang pemimpi (2009) from Indonesia and Merry-Go-Round 東風破 (2010) from Hong Kong.

Related Reviews

  1. Aftershock | 唐山大地震
Long-limbed drama is surprisingly moving without being a simple tearjerker.
  2. Cold Fish | 冷たい熱帯魚
Another wild ride from Love Exposure director Sono Sion, in an everyday story of a mass serial killer.
  3. Don't Be Afraid, Bi! | Bi, dung so!
Patchwork portrait of a Hanoi family one hot summer mixes normality and sexuality into a baffling, so-what mix.
  4. The Dreamer | Sang pemimpi
Heartwarming tale of small-town teenagers trying to realise their dreams is polished entertainment.
  5. End of Animal | 짐승의 끝
An original horror-cum-apocalypse movie whose sense of menace is not limited by its low budget.
  6. The Fourth Portrait | 第4張畫
Often atmospheric study of a boy's lonely emotional life is diluted by a lack of dramatic focus.
  7. Merry-Go-Round | 東風破
Multi-layered Hong Kong family drama spanning half a century has plenty of dusty nostalgia but a poor script.
  8. Sandcastle | 沙城
Good-looking debut feature that's stronger as a family portrait than as the promised story of a Singaporean teenager's sexual-political awakening.
  9. Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives | ลุงบุญมีระลึกชาติ
Baffling and ponderous take on reincarnation by Thailand's high-art festival favourite.
