The International Film Festival Rotterdam (25 Jan – 5 Feb 2012) has sliced back its Bright Future sidebar, but still finds room for 12 films from the Asia-Pacific region.
Its 2012 line-up gives world premieres to Carnival (2011), an Indian film that mixes fiction and documentary elements, and Parts of the Heart, an assembly of eight gay-themed short films by Indonesia's Paul AGUSTA.
There are also international premieres for Ex Press (2011) which the festival describes as 'part documentary, part dream' by Filipino first time director Jet LEYCO; claustrophobic Chinese drama Sentimental Animal 感情動物 (2011); and rural drama The Sound of Light ひかりのおと (2011) by Japan's YAMASAKI Juichiro 山崎樹一郎. India-US picture screens Valley of Saints (pictured) will screen shortly after its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival.
The section, which is only open to first and second feature films, was trimmed from 84 titles in 2011 to 68 this time.

Small but heartfelt family drama has a simplicity that's beguiling.
