Let the Bullets Fly 讓子彈飛 (2010) and Flying Swords of Dragon Gate 龍門飛甲 (2011) lead the nominations for the 31st Hong Kong Film Awards. They are among 18 Hong Kong-financed films released last year that have been recognised in 18 categories.
JIANG Wen 姜文's Bullets and TSUI Hark 徐克's Flying Swords compete for best picture and best director against Ann HUI 許鞍華's A Simple Life 桃姐 (2011), Johnnie TO 杜琪峰's Life Without Principle 奪命金 (2011) and Overheard 2 竊聽風雲2 (2011), co-directed by Alan MAK 麥兆輝 and Felix CHONG 莊文強.
Bullets' and Flying Swords both received 13 nominations. Runner up, with 11 nominations, is Peter CHAN 陳可辛's Wu Xia 武俠 (2011). Life Without Principle, A Simple Life and Overheard 2 are recognised with 8 nominations each. Seven other films have multiple nominations.
For best actor, both China's Jiang Wen and GE You 葛優 are recognised for their performances in Bullets. The remainder of the nominees are locals: LAU Ching-wan 劉青雲 competes for his roles in both Overheard 2 and Life Without Principle; Andy LAU 劉德華 is nominated for A Simple Life.
Deanie IP 葉德嫻 is the only local nominee in the best actress category, for A Simple Life. She is shortlisted with Taiwan's SHU Qi 舒淇 (A Beautiful Life 不再讓你孤單 (2011)) and China's ZHOU Xun 周迅 (Flying Swords), GAO Yuanyuan 高圓圓 (Don't Go Breaking My Heart 單身男女 (2010)) and TANG Wei 湯唯 (Wu Xia).
Talent from China and Taiwan are not the only foreign nominees. Cinematographer Jake POLLOCK is nominated for Wu Xia, editor David RICHARDSON for Life Without Principle and Base FX's Christopher BREMBLE for Mural. There is also recognition for several technicians from Thailand and South Korea.
Nominations in the best new director category have, however, been reserved for local film-makers: Jessey TSANG 曾翠珊 for Big Blue Lake 大藍湖 (2011), Calvin POON 潘源良 for Hi, Fidelity 出軌的女人 (2011) and Bill YIP 葉劍峰 for Cure 金不換 (2010).
Nominees in the separate category for the best film from China and Taiwan that does not have Hong Kong investment are The Flowers of War 金陵十三釵 (2011), If You Are the One II 非誠勿擾Ⅱ (2010), Starry Starry Night 星空 (2011), Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale 賽德克・巴萊 (2011) and You Are the Apple of My Eye 那些年,我們一起追的女孩。 (2011).
The Awards will be presented at a ceremony on 15 Apr 2012.
Correction: The original story listed only 12 nominations for Flying Swords.
