New film works by Aditya ASSARAT อาทิตย์ อัสสรัตน์ (pictured), HUR Jin-ho 허진호 | 許秦豪, Carol LAI 黎妙雪 and LIN Cheng-sheng 林正盛 are among the projects selected by the Asian Project Market, the Busan International Film Festival 부산국제영화제's renamed Pusan Promotion Plan (10-13 Oct 2011).
The event secured 30 projects from across the region including six from South Korea and a further four from Japan. Among the surprise entries are solo feature film debuts by leading Korean film producer KIMJHO Gwang-soo 김조광수 and Wayne CHANG 張心望, general manager of Taiwan distributor Catchplay Inc 威望國際股份有限公司.
Selectors say that rather than concentrating exclusively on art-house titles, they have included a number of genre titles including Indonesian horror project Killers, RYOO Seung-wan 류승완 | 柳昇完's spy thriller The Berlin File 베를린, Nonzee NIMIBUTR นนทรีย์ นิมิบุตร's psycho-thriller Distortion คน-โลก-จิต and PARK Chan-kyong 박찬경's When the Bell Rings Itself.
Several of the projects are co-produced with Japan, including Chang's Legend of the T-Dog 命運狗不理, The Mo Brothers' Killers and Southeast Asian omnibus Southeast Loves. Hur's adaptation of Dangerous Liaisons 危險關係, already made in Korean by E J-yong 이재용 | 李在容 as Untold Scandal 스캔들 (2003), plans to shoot in China with Chinese stars.
Separately, Busan's parallel Asian Film Market announced a 30% increase in the number of participants and a 40% rise in the number of exhibitors by the close of the early-bird registration period on 31 July. There has been particularly strong interest from Japanese and American sales companies, whose numbers have doubled.
