IMAX screens in China clocked up an exceptional $640,000 over the weekend with their screenings of Feng Xiaogang's Aftershock (唐山大地震).
According to IMAX and Huayi Brother Media Corp (華誼兄弟). the film generated $640,000 at the box office from the 12 screens that carried the movie in its large screen version. That equates to a per screen average of $55,000.
Aftershock is the first mainstream Chinese film and the first mainstream commercial film produced and distributed by a studio outside of the US to be digitally re-mastered into IMAX format. "The early results of this effort bode well for us, as IMAX explores converting other local content in China and elsewhere," said Richard Gelfond, CEO of IMAX Corp.
Huayi reported that the film scored some RMB160 million ($23.5 million), in total over opening weekend. It will open on three additional IMAX screens in early August.
