Lupin III vs. Detective Conan: The Movie ルパン三世vs名探偵コナン ＴＨＥ ＭＯＶＩＥ (2013) took the topped the Japan box office for the second consecutive weekend, despite the opening of Gravity (2013).
The animated film – the first feature film to bring the two popular manga characters together – made an additional ¥473 million (US$4.59 million) on Saturday and Sunday. After eight days on release, it has made ¥1.45 billion (US$14 million).
Alfonso CUARÓN's Gravity opened on Friday and made ¥303 million (US$2.94 million) from 197,000 admission on 549 screens on Saturday and Sunday. With 77.5% of its grosses coming from the 3-D version, the sci-fi thriller broke the record for first-week 3-D grosses in Japan. Avatar (2009) was the previous record holder with 76.36%, and Life of Pi (2012)'s first-week 3-D percentage was 70.95%.
After its three days of release (it opened last Friday instead of the usual Saturday, Gravity has made ¥372 million (US$3.61 million). Its average ticket price approximately ¥1500 (US$14.6), much higher than the usual average ticket price of ¥1100-1300.
The top local live-action film was The Liar and His Lover カノジョは嘘を愛しすぎてる (2013) (pictured). On 284 screens, the film made ¥164 million (US$1.59 million) from approximately 136,000 admissions. The youth romance is based on AOKI Kotomi 青木琴美's manga series, which is still ongoing.
Period comedy A Tale of Samurai Cooking: A True Love Story 武士の献立 (2013) opened on 261 screens nationwide for a two-day total of ¥79.8 million (US$775,000) from 71,500 admissions.
