Production has got underway on a re-vamped The Guillotines 血滴子, the period Chinese action film which has seen Andrew LAU 劉偉強 replace Teddy CHEN 陳德森 as director.
The $15 million film produced by Peter CHAN 陳可辛 and Jojo HUI 許月珍 is now structured as a co-venture between Chan's We Pictures Ltd 我們製作有限公司 and Media Asia Group Holdings Ltd 寰亞傳媒集團有限公司.
Other production partners include China's Dingsheng Cultural Industry Investment Co Ltd 鼎盛文化產業投資有限公司 and Taiwan's Polyface Entertainment Media Group 柏合麗娛樂傳媒集團 as well as the previously announced Stellar Mega Films Co Ltd 星美(北京)影業有限公司.
Media Asia will handle sales in Asia (but excluding China), while Chan's sales outfit We Distribution Ltd will take charge of international sales in other territories.
The cast includes HUANG Xiaoming 黃曉明 (The Message 風聲 (2009)), Ethan RUAN 阮經天 (Monga 艋舺 (2010)), Shawn YUE 余文樂 (Reign of Assassins 劍雨 (2010)) and JING Boran 井柏然 (Hot Summer Days 全城熱戀 (2010)) as members of a covert assassination squad that carry out secret missions for the Emperor.
Lau previously stepped in as an uncredited co-director of Chen and We Pictures' 2009 hit Bodyguards and Assassins 十月圍城 (2009). The new film also brings back Bodyguards action choreographer LEE Tat-chiu 李達超 and costume designer Dora NG 吳里璐. Art Director is LAU Sai-wan 劉世運 (Lust, Caution 色,戒 (2007)).
We Pictures has previously said that the film is not a remake of the 1975 cult classic, The Flying Guillotine 血滴子 (1975), and that it changed the English title in order to distance the new picture from the old.
Shooting is taking place in Shanxi Province, China. Release is set for 2012.
