New Zealand's most celebrated film director last week called it a wrap on The Hobbit.
Jackson announced on Facebook that principal photography in New Zealand had been completed on Friday (6 July) after 266 days.
"We made it! Shoot day 266 and the end of principal photography on The Hobbit. Thanks to our fantastic cast and crew for getting us this far, and to all of you for your support! Next stop, the cutting room. Oh, and Comic Con! Cheers, Peter J," he said.
The first part of the film The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is to be released on 14 Dec this year, while the second The Hobbit: There and Back Again has been pencilled in a full year later 13 Dec 2013.
The films were shot at a high frame rate of 48 frames per second, giving a more fluid and lifelike motion than conventional 24 fps films. They will be shown in 3-D. Early footage shown at CinemaCon earlier this year got mixed reactions, with some viewers finding the added realism almost too much.
