Singaporean production and distribution entity Homerun Asia 家樂電影 is collaborating with Chinese media firm Zonbo Media 北京中博世紀影視傳媒有限公司 on a slate of films, the two companies said at ScreenSingapore on Tuesday.
Homerun and Zonbo will invest RMB400-500 million ($61.7-77 million) over the next three years on a slate of five "commercial Asian films", said CHEN Weiming 陳偉明, chairman of Zonbo Media.
Films include a Chinese remake of Dangerous Liaisons, and 1965, a historical epic based on the events leading up to Singapore's independence.
Dangerous Liaisons will be directed by Korean film-maker HUR Jin-ho 허진호 | 許秦豪 on an announced budget of US$15 million. The film starts production in September.
The $5 million 1965 will be directed by Singapore-based Malaysian director LEE Thean Jeen 李天仁, with superstar director Peter CHAN 陳可辛 attached as supervisory director. The film is scheduled to begin shooting by year-end.
"China is our most crucial Asian market. Zonbo Media is one of the few media companies in China with an international outlook," said Daniel YUN 雲暉翔, CEO of Homerun Asia. "We are pleased to have found a partner with the same direction and focus."
Zonbo Media primarily does business in South Korea, where it has co-founded a production company, BALCON Co Ltd, and a distribution company, Zonbo-Balcon, in partnership with the Busan International Film Festival 부산국제영화제.
