Some 60 films will screen next week at the inaugural edition of the Hua Hin International Film Festival

Highlights include a showing of The Lady (2011) with leading actress Michelle YEOH 楊紫瓊 and director Luc BESSON in attendance; a Korean night, built around the screening of melodrama Always 오직 그대만 (2011); Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale (2011) as opening film; and a gala screening for local Thai film It Gets Better

Other hot titles include Meryl Steep-vehicle, The Iron Lady (2011) and An Ordinary Love Story

Fulfilling its mission to be a showcase for Asian and in particular South East Asian cinema the festival will also include screenings for Pinoy Sunday (2009), Ways of the Sea Halaw (2010) and Niño (2011) (pictured) from The Philippines, Fool for Love Để mai tính (2010) from Vietnam, Moon Lotus from Myanmar, KL Gangster (2011) from Malaysia, drama Kiles from Cambodia, It's a Great Great World 大世界 (2011) from Singapore, and Boy's Diary Catatan (harian) si boy (2011) and Borders (Batan), both from Indonesia.

Related Reviews

  1. Always |
A mainstream, TV-style melodrama made by a director with no feeling for the genre, boosted only by okay leads.
  2. The Client |
Strong leads and US-style packaging make this legal drama a smooth, if unoriginal, ride.
  3. Headshot |
A part return to form by director Pen-ek Ratanaruang in an existential crime noir.
  4. It Gets Better |
Interwoven stories centred on sexual transgressiveness are well-mounted but dramatically thin.
  5. It's a Great Great World | 大世界
Likable but very local heartwarmer centred on a once-famous Singapore amusement park.
  6. Laddaland |
Technically effective horror movie set in a comfy gated community is weak on a plot level.
  7. The Lady
Bitty biopic of Aung San Suu Kyi is too much hagiography, too little big-screen drama.
  8. Moby Dick |
Routine '90s conspiracy thriller has likable performances but not much political depth.
  9. Pinoy Sunday |
Vignettish "road movie" about two Filipino workers on their day off in Taipei is slim but likable.
  10. The Sword Identity |
Original, lowkey satire of martial-arts codes that's too academic for its own good.
Okay entry from the maker of The Grudge, with a giant rabbit and more atmosphere than plot.
  12. Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale |
International version of the two-part Taiwan epic is watchable but uninvolving, with repetitive action.
  13. Ways of the Sea | Halaw
Skilfully crafted miniature of illegal immigrants journeying by boat from the Philippines to Sabah.
