China's Huayi Brothers Media Corporation 華誼兄弟傳媒股份有限公司 has come on board Mr. Go 미스터고, one of the most expensive South Korean films of all time.
Huayi will spend $5 million on an investment stake and take Greater China distribution rights to the special effects heavy picture, which has a nominal budget in the $20+ million range.
The Showbox-backed Mr Go is the story of a Chinese girl and her baseball playing gorilla, who is recruited to play in the professional leagues in Korea. It features young Chinese actress Josie XU 徐嬌 (pictured), who started her career in CJ7 長江7號 (2008) and recently headlined in Starry Starry Night 星空 (2011).
The film, which is now in production, is directed by blockbuster director KIM Yong-hwa 김용화 and is produced by Dexter Films 덱스터필름 in co-production with Contents Eye 컨텐츠아이.
Showbox said that the film will be completed in time for summer 2013 distribution and that Huayi will handle the China, Hong Kong/Macau and Taiwan releases.
In a statement Showbox described the deal as a "profound partnership" with one of China's biggest film investors, and "the first step in a new global project model," and "the launching pad for penetration into [China] one of the biggest markets in the world."
