Leading Chinese film conglomerate Huayi Brothers Media Corporation 華誼兄弟傳媒股份有限公司 is to expand its TV production operations by building series franchises from its film properties.
The company has announced series based on box office hits If You are the One 非誠勿擾 (2008) and Aftershock 唐山大地震 (2010) directed by FENG Xiaogang 馮小剛, a major shareholder in the company.
Aftershock begins shooting this month with television actress Chen Xiaoyi (陳小藝) in the role of the anguished mother who survives the earthquake. In the original feature, the role was played by Feng's wife, XU Fan 徐帆.
Also based on a property originally directed by Feng, If You Are The One (pictured) will shoot from Feb 2012 with HUANG Bo 黃渤 in the GE You 葛優 role. The series will also feature Korean actor KIM Seong-su 김성수. Female stars are yet to be announced.
In addition, Huayi are also developing their own version of the Mulan story, to be directed by GAO Qunshu 高群書. It will star popular comedienne YAO Chen 姚晨 in the eponymous female lead role.
Huayi says that it will spend RMB2 million ($315,000) per episode.
