Celestial Pictures Ltd 天映娛樂有限公司 has struck its first licensing deal in Africa for the martial arts action films from the Shaw Bros (HK) Ltd 邵氏兄弟(香港)有限公司 library.
The company said that it has struck a deal with Sony Max, Sony Pictures Television's 24-hour action and reality channel in Africa that launched in February.
The deal gives exclusive cable and satellite broadcast rights to Sony Max for a package of titles including The 36th Chamber of Shaolin 少林三十六房 (1978), The Chinese Boxer 龍虎門 (1970), Mad Monkey Kung Fu 瘋猴 (1979) (pictured), Shaolin Temple 少林寺 (1976) and Vengeance! 執仇 (1970).
"[The deal] is a testimony to the evergreen entertainment value of these classics as well as the continued worldwide interest in martial arts movies and Chinese movies in general," said Gigi KO 高慧芝, director of distribution at Celestial Pictures.
The channel currently has 3.3 million subscribers and is available in 48 countries in Africa via MultiChoice's DStv Compact and Premium services.
