The 65th Locarno Film Festival | Festival del film Locarno (1-11 Aug 2012) embraces Asian indies next month with new films by China's YING Liang 應亮, Japan's KAWASE Naomi 河瀬直美 and the Philippines' Raya MARTIN.
Among the more accessible highlights are screenings in the huge open air Piazza Grande venue for Lore by Australia's Cate SHORTLAND and Motorway 車手, by Hong Kong's Soi CHEANG 鄭保瑞.
There are two Asian features in the international competition, MIYAKE Sho 三宅唱's Playback (pictured) and Ying Liang's controversial docudrama When Night Falls 我還有話要說 about a mother whose son was executed for killing six policemen in 2008.
Ying's film is one of three commissioned by the Jeonju International Film Festival 전주국제영화제 screening this year. The other two are Vimukthi JAYASUNDARA's Light in the Yellow Breathing Space 마지막 순간의 빛 and Raya Martin's The Great Cinema Party 그레이트 시네마 파티.
The Cineastes of the Present section includes China's Memories Look at Me 記憶望著我 by SONG Fang 宋方 and Indonesia's Peculiar Vacation and Other Illnesses Vakansi yang janggal dan penyakit lainnya by Yosep Anggi NOEN.
The previously announced tribute to Johnnie TO 杜琪峰 — headlined by the European premiere of thriller Motorway, which he produced — is partnered with a tribute to Japan's Kawase Naomi, including her latest short, Trace 塵.
