The festival has secured the international premiere of his latest film, Scabbard Samurai さや侍 (2011), which it will play on the massive Piazza Grande open air screen. It will also host screenings of Matsumoto's two previous films Dai Nipponjin 大日本人 (2007) and Symbol しんぼる (2009).
"In only three full-length features to date, [Matsumoto] has invented and experimented with new forms of comic fiction. Highly original, shifting between burlesque, surrealism and popular genres, his new ideas have proved capable of surprising and delighting even the most blasé of audiences," said Olivier PÈRE, Locarno's artistic director. "This is one of the main revelations in contemporary cinema over the past few years."
Scabbard Samurai stars newcomer NOMI Takaaki 野見隆明 and child actress MATSUDA Sea 熊田聖亜 opposite KUNIMURA Jun 國村隼. It was produced by Yoshimoto Kogyo Group 吉本興業 and Kyoraku Sangyo 京楽産業. It is set for theatrical release in Japan on 11 June through Shochiku Co Ltd 松竹.
