The 64th Locarno Film Festival | Festival del film Locarno (3-13 August) has followed in the footsteps of this year's Cannes Film Festival by selecting two Japanese films to represent East Asia in its main competition.
The two titles are TOMITA Katsuya 富田克也's Saudade サウダーヂ (2011) and AOYAMA Shinji 青山真治's Tokyo Koen 東京公園 (2011) (pictured). Both films are presented as international premieres at the Swiss festival.
Another Japanese film, MATSUMOTO Hitoshi 松本人志 Scabbard Samurai さや侍 (2011) screens in the Piazza Grande as part of a three-film retrospective to the comedy director that includes Dai Nipponjin 大日本人 (2007) and Symbol しんぼる (2009).
The Filmmakers of the Present Competition includes two Chinese films from the recent Shanghai International Film Festival 上海國際電影節, HAN Jie 韓杰's Mr. Tree Hello! 樹先生 (2010) and SONTHAR Gyal 松太加's The Sun Beaten Path 太陽總在左邊 (2010).
The festival also presents the European premiere of JIANG Wen 姜文's Chinese western Let the Bullets Fly 讓子彈飛 (2010) that received its international premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in April.
