Germany-based world sales company Media Luna New Films has acquired LEE Chi-yuarn 李啟源's new relationship drama Blowfish 河豚.

The Taiwan film is about a young woman who, having been cheated on by her boyfriend, moves in with the stranger who has bought her pet blowfish in an internet auction. The stranger, a baseball coach, is waiting for the return of his wife who has run away with another man.

Lee previously directed Hurricane Festival (1997), Chocolate Rap 巧克力重擊 (2005) and Beautiful Crazy 亂青春 (2008). The film stars newcomer Vicci PAN 潘之敏, who also co-wrote the script, opposite Chris WU 吳慷仁, LU Yi-ching 陸奕靜 and Angel YAO 姚安琪.

The film's producer CHIEN Li-fen 簡麗芬, who negotiated the deal with Media Luna's managing director Ida MARTINS and acquisitions manager Alessandro LOMBARDO, told Film Business Asia, "The deal opens a door for movies from Taiwan to reach a wider European audience."

The 13th Taipei Film Festival 台北電影節 (24 June — 16 July) presented the world premiere of Blowfish last night. It is among four feature films receiving gala premieres at the festival and competes in the event's Taipei Awards for a NT$1 million ($35,000) cash prize.

Blowfish will be theatrically released in Taiwan on 5 August through local distributor Swallow Wings Films Co Ltd 海鵬影業有限公司 in partnership with the film's production company, Happy Pictures 快活映畫股份有限公司.
