Ocean Heaven (海洋天堂) won three prizes at the Movie Channel Media Awards in Shanghai last night in the best film, best new director and best actor categories. The melodrama starring Jet Li (李連杰) as the father of an autistic son, is also competing in the Shanghai festival's international competition.
Two other films took two prizes each. Distant Thunder won best director for Zhang Jiarui (章家瑞) and best new actor for Guo Xiaoran (郭曉然). City Monkey (玩酷青春), billed as China's first parkour movie, won best actor for Lu Liping (呂麗萍) and best supporting actress for Li Bin (李濱).
One of the most popular prizes of the evening was for best supporting actor awarded to 86-year-old Yip Chun (葉准), the eldest son of the real-life Ip Man who has made his acting debut in The Legend is Born: Ip Man (葉問前傳). Yip was also eligible for the best new actor award.
One surprise of the evening was the media award for Heaven Eternal, Earth Everlasting (80'后). Although the film was not strictly eligible for the awards, the soon-to-be-released youth drama was nevertheless selected by the national media attending the Shanghai festival.
Launched in 2004, the Movie Channel Media Awards are now in their 7th edition. Nominated films are chosen from among the Chinese films screening at the Shanghai International Film Festival.
