CJ E&M Corp 씨제이이앤엠 주식회사 has scored strongly with the multiple online releases of its hit film Sunny 써니 (2011).

Sunny was released for download via portals and cloud services on 8 Sep, shortly before the Chuseok public holidays, and achieved ₩700 million ($597,000) after 10 days.

Separately it earned ₩600 million ($511,000) on Korea Telecom's IPTV service. Taken together with revenues from other IPTV outlets, CJ estimates that Sunny earned ₩1.5 billion ($1.28 million) over the Chuseok period and is on course for total ancillary revenues of ₩3 billion ($2.56 million).

In comparison, Cyrano Agency 시라노; 연애조작단 (2010) earned a reported ₩430 million ($370,000) in total online while Detective K: Secret of Virtuous Widow 조선명탐정: 각시투구꽃의 비밀 (2011) earned ₩700 million ($597,000).

Sunny was released on 4 May 2011 and achieved over 7.41 million admissions for a theatrical gross of ₩54.5 billion ($46.5 million). IPTV companies report that many of the viewers were people who had previously seen the film in cinemas, but were re-watching it at home with their family.

The improving online outlook is a boon for the film industry in Korea, which became heavily dependent on theatrical revenues when the video market collapsed and was replaced by a combination of copyright infringing DVDs, peer-to-peer sharing and illegal online providers.

The director's cut of Sunny, theatrically released by CJ E&M in late July, screens at next month's Busan International Film Festival 부산국제영화제.
