Shah Rukh KHAN's sci-fi comedy Ra.One र.वन grossed a worldwide total of $35 million in its opening weekend.
The five days 26-30 Oct total includes a gross of $28.2 million in India and a further $6.8 million overseas, according to distributor Eros International Media Ltd.
It was released on some 3,100 screens in India and 904 prints internationally, including 3D, Tamil and Telugu versions. Eros says this constitutes a record for first weekend international figures for an Indian movie, and beats previous Khan starring film My Name is Khan (2010). It comes in addition to other claimed records in India for highest single day India collections, highest India Diwali day collections, and highest India weekend collections.
Eros does not break down the overseas data, though alternative box office suppliers report that Ra.One was the 12th ranking film in North America, and the third largest opener, with a gross of $1.65 million from 189 engagements. That was the third highest per screen average of any film in North America and the best per screen average for any film on a multi-print release. With $8,751 per screen, it narrowly beat US box office winner Puss in Boots, which earned $8,632 per screen.
