Bruno WU 吳徵 and Fred MILSTEIN's Seven Stars Film Studios 七星電影有限公司 is to be the lead investor in The Last Empress, an English-language tale about the turbulent life of Empress Dowager Cixi (1835-1908).
The project has been developed by Jake EBERTS' Allied Productions East, which is a joint venture between Eberts' Allied Filmmakers and SSFS. It will be produced by Eberts with the UK's Jeremy THOMAS as consultant. Thomas produced Bernardo BERTOLUCCI's The Last Emperor (1987).
The script is being written by SHENG Heyu 盛和煜, screen writer of the 2003 CCTV series Towards The Republic (走向共和), in which which the actress LÜ Zhong 呂中 played the role of Cixi. Sheng also co-scripted FENG Xiaogang 馮小剛's The Banquet 夜宴 (2006) and John WOO 吳宇森's Red Cliff 赤壁 (2008).
Production is expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2013, after a director and cast have been attached.
