Spackman Equities Group Inc (SEGI), a Hong Kong- and Toronto-based company with a track record of Asian media investments, has set up a division to back the film slates of two South Korean producers.
The company, which already owns 58% majority stakes in Opus Pictures Co Ltd 오퍼스 픽처스 and Zip Cinema Co Ltd 영화사 집, said that it has created a wholly-owned subsidiary Spackman Entertainment Korea.
It will "selectively make 'seed' investments in the upcoming movie titles produced by Opus and Zip, positioning itself to gain economic exposure to its subsidiaries' film projects from both an investment perspective as well as from a production revenue perspective."
Film developer, producer, and investor, Opus is headed by LEE Tae-hun 이태헌 and was responsible for 2010 hit The Man from Nowhere 아저씨 (2010). It is currently co-producing BONG Joon-ho 봉준호 | 奉俊昊's ambitious Snowpiercer 설국열차.
Zip, which is headed by Eugene LEE 이유진, was responsible for Voice of a Murderer 그놈 목소리 (2007), Woochi 전우치 (2009) and, most recently, All About My Wife 내 아내의 모든 것 (pictured), which clocked up over 4.17 million ticket sales locally.
Between 2004-5 Spackman was the majority owner of Sidus FNH Corp 싸이더스FNH, before selling it to Korea Telecom. The firm has been listed on Toronto's TSX Venture Exchange since October last year.
