Approximately 130 Chinese-language narrative features film were submitted to the 50th Golden Horse Awards 金馬獎 before its 6pm deadline today. Including documentaries and shorts, there were over 200 submissions in total.

The number of entries represents a slight increase on last year's count, when there were 117 feature film submissions. However this year's numbers may yet fall after the eligibility of each submission has been determined.

Organisers told Film Business Asia that, of the feature submissions, approximately 27% are from China, 27% from Taiwan, 20% from Hong Kong, and 10% from Singapore and Malaysia. The outstanding 16% are Greater China co-productions.

There have been concern in the Taiwan media that local films may lose out this year, given their poor critical and commercial reception. New films by TSAI Ming-liang 蔡明亮, CHANG Tso-chi 張作驥 and CHUNG Mong-hong 鍾孟宏 have been submitted.

At this stage, approximately 40 of the 130 narrative features submitted are by first-time directors including Cold War 寒戰 (2012), So Young 致我們終將逝去的青春 (2013) and Ilo Ilo 爸媽不在家 (2013), making the Best New Director Award particularly competitive this year.

As part of this year's anniversary celebrations, the Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival Executive Committee 台北金馬影展執行委員會 will publish a book of interviews with past winners and hold an exhibition of archival materials.

In May, Hong Kong actress Maggie CHEUNG 張曼玉 (pictured with HOU Hsiao-hsien 侯孝賢) was announced as the 50th Golden Horse Film Festival Ambassador. With five wins, she has won the most Golden Horse Awards for an actor.

The nomination list will be announced on 1 Oct 2013. The ceremony of the 50th Golden Horse Awards will be held on 23 Nov 2013 in Taipei.
