The director's cut of box office sensation Sunny 써니 (2011) is released in South Korea by CJ E&M Corp 씨제이이앤엠 주식회사 today, 28 July. The original version was still ranked in the top ten over the weekend as it entered its 12th week on release.
The drama, which has a flashback structure, is about a middle-aged housewife who searches out her former high school classmates for a reunion after being separated for twenty five years.
Running approximately ten minutes longer, the revised cut adds more contemporary scenes. Director KANG Hyung-chul 강형철 has also restored its original strong language, earning it a more restrictive 18-rating.
By Sunday night, Sunny had crossed 7.1 million admissions in South Korea and had taken ₩52.1 billion ($49.5 million) since opening on 4 May. It is the 12th highest-grossing South Korean film of all time.
Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011) had reached 7.4 million admissions and grossed ₩71.2 billion ($67.8 million) by Sunday night. Although Sunny is unlikely to match its gross, it may yet overtake its number of admissions.
Kang's previous film, Scandal Makers 과속스캔들 (2008), made ₩53.7 billion ($51.1 million) on 8.3 million admissions.
