Drama Sunny 써니 (2011) returned to the top of the South Korean box office charts during its eighth weekend on theatrical release. It has so far sold 5.7 million tickets for a current gross of ₩42.1 billion ($38.8 million).
KANG Hyung-chul 강형철's film, about a woman who searches for her former high school friends, opened on 4 May 2011 through CJ-CGV. After two weeks at the top of the charts, it was displaced by Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011). For the following four weeks, CJ E&M's Kung Fu Panda 2 (2011) held the top spot before Sunny reclaimed it this weekend.
Kang's only previous film is comedy Scandal Makers 과속스캔들 (2008) that grossed ₩53.7 billion ($49.6 million) with 8.3 million admissions. Scandal Makers was theatrically released in Hong Kong (Golden Scene Co Ltd 高先電影有限公司), Singapore (Encore Films Pte Ltd 創藝電影 and Cathay-Keris Films Pte Ltd 國泰克裡斯公司) and China (China Film Group Corporation 中國電影集團公司).
The number two spot was held by another local film, JUHN Jai-hong 전재홍 | 全宰弘's Poongsan 풍산개 (2011). In four days, the film grossed ₩2.2 billion ($2.0 million) with 285,000 admissions. Written and produced by KIM Ki-duk 김기덕 | 金基德, the drama is about a man hired by a South Korean agent to sneak the lover of a high-ranking North Korean defector across the border, only to fall in love with his package.
Sunny's return to the top of the South Korean box office charts is likley short-lived. CJ E&M releases Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011) tomorrow.

A joyous comedy-drama of female friendship, with excellent ensemble work and lots of retro nostalgia.
