North American rights to Japanese comedy action film Dead Sushi デッド寿司 (2012) have been acquired by Action Slate Releasing and Millennium Entertainment.

The film, directed by IGUCHI Noboru 井口昇, stars martial arts prodigy TAKEDA Rina 武田梨奈. It is the first movie to emerge from Walker Pictures ウォーカーピクチャーズ, the new producing and distribution offshoot of veteran Japanese talent agency Office Walker.

The film previously screened at the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (BiFan) 부천국제판타스틱영화제 in July and had its US premiere this week at Fantastic Fest (20-27 Sep), where the rights deal was announced.

Action Slate is the US and Canada releasing arm of international film sales and production company Birch Tree Entertainment. Its recent DVD and VoD releases of Asian titles include Thai horror Laddaland ลัดดาแลนด์ (2011) and High-Kick Girl! ハイキック・ガール (2009). The latter also stars Takeda.

Millennium, which is next releasing Cannes competition film The Paperboy, recently acquired rights to What Maisie Knew (2013) by directors Scott McGEHEE and David SIEGEL.
